Time: 16.00 - 17.00 (Geneva, CEST)
Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), including sexualized deepfakes, has become one of the most acute and rapidly escalating harms enabled by generative AI. The technology to create such images is now widely accessible, while legal frameworks in most countries have not kept pace. The harm falls disproportionately on women and girls and carries severe consequences for victims, including psychological trauma and a chilling effect on women’s public participation.
NCII is an issue that demands urgent legislative attention, as existing laws in most countries were not written with AI-generated content in mind and leave gaps in protection for victims. It is also one that is rising fast on parliamentary agendas worldwide, raising questions about how legislatures can exercise their lawmaking and oversight functions to keep pace with rapidly advancing technology.
This webinar will draw on an upcoming IPU issue brief on this topic. The session will bring together parliamentarians and experts in the field to examine the following key questions:
What does effective legislation look like, and where do current laws fail to account for AI-generated content?
How can parliaments review and strengthen existing frameworks on privacy, data protection and online safety to close the gaps?
What obligations should fall on platforms for detection, removal and redress?
How are parliamentary committees building the expertise and cross-departmental coordination needed to legislate on a fast-moving technology?
This webinar is relevant for:
Parliamentarians working on legislation related to digital harms, gender-based violence or online safety
- Parliamentary staff and researchers working on AI policy, gender equality or human rights
Parliamentarians and staff from all regions interested in how peers are legislating on emerging AI-facilitated harms
Speaker: Ms. Lena Gumnior, Member of the Bundestag, Germany
Language(s): English, French, Spanish, Arabic
The video recording will be published on the IPU’s Artificial Intelligence YouTube channel.
