IPU welcomes the recent initiative by President Abdulla Yameen calling for dialogue between the Government and political parties in the Maldives. Ongoing political tensions in the country have been a serious concern for IPU.

IPU acknowledges the constructive steps taken by the President to promote political reconciliation and strengthen legislative and judicial reforms. IPU encourages all political parties to take this opportunity to engage in dialogue in good faith and in a constructive spirit in order to enhance democracy, including securing the human rights of political leaders and representatives of the people.

IPU notes that there will be challenges ahead but is confident that through dialogue differences can be addressed and solutions identified to reduce tensions.
