United States

Summary

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the United Nations hub for the global review of progress toward the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The main theme of the 2019 session, held under the aegis of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. While assessing overall progress toward the SDGs, the session will pay special attention to SDGs 4, 8, 10, 13, 16 and 17.

As a contribution to the HLPF, the IPU will hold a Parliamentary Forum on Monday, 15 July, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is designed to give parliamentarians participating in the HLPF an opportunity to discuss the main theme of the session and exchange experiences on SDGs implementation. The Forum will be held in the UN Headquarters (Conference Room 1).

In addition to the Parliamentary Forum, the IPU is organzing and supporting a number of other events where parliamentarians taking part in the HLPF discussions will be given the opportunity to discuss HLPF related topics. These include:

  • A Senior Level Meeting (SLM) of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation on 13 and 14 July, co-sponsored by the IPU, which will bring together some 600 participants to discuss development cooperation.
  • A workshop for MPs to assess the readiness of parliaments to engage in SDGs implementation (a mock SDG self-assessment exercise) in the afternoon of 16 July.
  • .A side event on inclusive decision making and effective institutions,  18 July, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • A side event on the right to nationality and on statelessness, 18 July, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m
