IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong recently received the Ambassadors of Egypt and Slovakia at the Organization’s Headquarters.

On 22 November 2017, Mr. Chungong met with Mr. Juraj Podhorský, Ambassador of Slovakia. They talked about how IPU and Slovakia could cooperate in furthering the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Mr. Chungong emphasised the importance of involving the Parliament in both the monitoring of, and reporting on, the goals’ implementation. Slovakia will be reporting to the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2018.

Mr. Alaa Youssef, the new Egyptian Ambassador, called on Mr. Chungong on 23 November 2017. Mr. Chungong reiterated his commitment to strengthen ties with the Egyptian Parliament and said that the IPU would continue to provide support to the Parliament to help it fulfil the expectations of the Egyptian people. Mr. Youssef and Mr. Chungong also discussed cooperation in efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism. In 2018, the IPU is organizing a regional seminar in Egypt on the role of parliaments in the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1540 on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction to non-state actors.
