Mr. Martin Chungong, IPU Secretary General, welcomed Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), at the IPU Headquarters. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus took up his post as Director-General in May 2017, and this was his first official meeting with Mr. Chungong.

The IPU and WHO have worked together on parliaments’ role in health care, especially concerning women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health. For the last two years, the IPU has organized parliamentary meetings at the World Health Assembly, and the two heads stressed the importance of mobilizing parliaments to attend the next World Health Assembly, which will take place in May this year in Geneva.

Mr. Chungong and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus agreed to broaden cooperation in line with the strategic priorities of both organizations. They will work towards a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will focus on strengthening the role of parliaments in promoting universal health coverage and reinforcing health systems.
