Engaging parliaments on the fourth cycle of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

-

Summary

Online preparatory briefing for parliaments of countries which will be examined by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) from 23 January to 7 February 2023. This briefing is being organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Through its Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) examines the human rights situation of each UN Member State every four and a half years. Parliaments, as the guardians of human rights, have a determining role to play in this process.  As part of the IPU’s effort to support parliamentary involvement in this process, as it did during the first three cycles - the online preparatory briefing aims to explore with parliamentarians and parliamentary staff of the 14 countries scheduled to be reviewed in January-February 2023 avenues to improve their contribution to this new cycle and to the work of the HRC in general.
