The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. IPU membership is made up of 180 national parliaments
Throughout the year, the IPU and its Members organize many events for parliamentarians to exchange good practices, acquire the latest information and identify avenues for action.
The IPU has been collecting data on parliaments since its inception in 1889, including information on women’s participation in politics since 1945. In this section, discover the IPU's knowledge bank for and about parliaments.

Summary
Session 1: Tuesday, 21 November 2023, 10:00–11:30 CET (interpretation in English, French and Arabic)
Session 2: Wednesday, 22 November 2023, 16:00–17:30 CET (interpretation in English and Spanish)
Parliaments, partners, civil society organizations and all interested parties are warmly invited to join the official launch of the Indicators for Democratic Parliaments.
The Indicators are a tool for institutional development that offers a new approach to measuring parliamentary capacity and performance. They are designed to support an evidence-based “health check” of parliaments and to help them to identify weak points or areas for improvement.
The launch event will present the purpose and content of the Indicators, as well as how they can be used to assess parliamentary capacity and performance.
The Indicators for Democratic Parliaments are a multi-partner initiative led by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, in partnership with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Directorio Legislativo Foundation, INTER PARES/International IDEA, the National Democratic Institute, the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
The launch event will be held online. The two sessions will have the same content but will take place at different times in order to enable participants in different time zones to attend. Participants can indicate which session they wish to join in the registration form.
