The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. IPU membership is made up of 180 national parliaments
Throughout the year, the IPU and its Members organize many events for parliamentarians to exchange good practices, acquire the latest information and identify avenues for action.
The IPU has been collecting data on parliaments since its inception in 1889, including information on women’s participation in politics since 1945. In this section, discover the IPU's knowledge bank for and about parliaments.
Learning from every loss: The role of parliamentarians in improving maternal health in Latin America and the Caribbean
Summary
10:00 – 11:30 GMT-4 / 16:00 – 17:30 CEST
Despite progress, women continue dying during and following pregnancy and childbirth. A better understanding of the circumstances of maternal deaths can help identify structural issues and other factors impacting women’s well-being and rights. This is the goal of maternal death reporting and review, a quality improvement intervention to reduce maternal mortality within a country’s overall healthcare system. This virtual workshop will mobilize parliamentarians in Latin America and the Caribbean to incorporate maternal mortality reporting and review in national legal frameworks.
The virtual workshop is co-organized by the IPU, the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. It is open to parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean and to government representatives. The workshop will take place on the Zoom platform. The languages will be English, French and Spanish.
