IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron paid official visits to Cyprus and Iran in June 2019.

In Cyprus she met with President Nicos Anastasiades, Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, House Speaker Demetris Syllouris and Archbishop Chrysostomos II.

Ms. Cuevas Barron addressed the House of Representatives, a privilege normally reserved for heads of State. Referring to the IPU’s 130th anniversary, she called for MPs to renew their commitment to the people they represented, strengthen democracy, foster respect for human rights and international law, and design inclusive, transparent and effective public institutions.

The IPU President expressed her support for the House’s initiative to set up a "parallel parliament" composed of social organizations, specialists, universities and other actors, with the aim of reinforcing the representative nature of the country’s parliamentary democracy. In a similar vein, the President applauded the "House of Citizens" initiative, which also aims to make parliamentary work more transparent and accessible.

In Iran, Ms. Cuevas Barron met with President Hassan Rouhani. Mr. Rouhani called for more cooperation between parliaments to resolve international issues, and praised the IPU’s role in bringing parliaments together. The IPU President called for dialogue and interaction to bring about peace and stability.

During her visit, Ms. Cuevas Barron also met with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, as well as Kazem Jalali, Member of the IPU Executive Committee, and Fatemeh Hosseini, President of the Iranian IPU Group.
